The Daws family has been farming in the U.S. since the 1700's. The first Daws family farm in Mississippi was started in 1849 by S.O. "Syer" Daws and his wife Agness. Starting with 40 acres, the farm grew and would come to included a store, school house, and post office. His great grandson, S.B. "Babe" Daws would move to Wayne County, where he would start his own farm. In 2016, Forrest S. Daws, Babe's only grandson, would found Dixie Farms, LLC.

The Texas Longhorn breed has a long and storied history. They are a living symbol of the old west and responsible for the rise of the cattle industry across the country. Unique and beautiful, Texas Longhorns are unlike other cattle breeds. With a variety of color patterns and horn size, both in shape and length, you never know what a calf will look like at birth or what they will grow up to be. Longhorns are a hardy and adaptable breed. They almost never require assistance with calving, thrive in a variety of weather conditions, and are great foragers. Besides being low maintenance and looking great in the pasture, Longhorns have several positive attributes to the investor. Longhorn hides and horns are used across the country as decor for those looking for a western touch. They are raised as show animals, with some having horns that exceed 100" from tip to tip! Longhorns also naturally produce a much leaner beef for the health conscious consumer.
Each breed of cattle is unique and has their own positive traits. For Texas Longhorns, one of those positives is providing the consumer with a lean beef product much healthier than traditional beef bought at the grocery store.
Ringer has Working Man Chex and JP Rio Grande as her grandfathers and is just beautiful. This sweet cow just turned five and she's just over 74" from tip to tip.
Grace is the great granddaughter of the legendary Sittin Bull. She is a big bodied cow with a ttt length of right at 72". We can't wait to see what this four year old does.
On November 17, 2016, the Daws family farm turned into Dixie Farms, LLC. One of the first steps after that was to decide on a brand for the livestock. After much thought, many sketches, and even some prayer, the Cross D brand was born. The brand measures 3” high x4” wide. The overall design, and even the measurement numbers, are significant. The 3 represents the Holy Trinity. The 4 represents the four generations of Daws men that have worked the Wayne County farm at the time of the farm’s founding. If you add 3 and 4 together, you get 7, which pays homage to the 7 original Longhorn families. The Cross comes first on the brand and is larger than the D. This represents the fact that God must come first and is bigger than the family and the business. The D represents the Daws name, as well as the business name of Dixie Farms. The Cross D brand represents not only the quality of livestock raised by the Daws family, but a life-long dream finally realized.
Don't let the idea of lean meat fool you. Longhorn beef is great! If you've ever tried and liked deer meat, you'll like Longhorn beef too. Enjoy all of the positives of red meat while avoiding some of the drawbacks. Give it a try. We think you'll like it more than what you'll find in the grocery store. Who says healthy can't be delicious?
