Forrest S. Daws and Mark Dyess
co-founders of Dixie Water Dogs
Dixie Water Dogs is more than just a part of Dixie Farms, LLC; it is a personal passion. It all began in 2004 when our life-long friend Mark adopted a Golden Retriever named Rusty from the local shelter. We had always been hunters, but we were primarily whitetail deer hunters. Mark began working with the dog on retrieves and Rusty was a quick study. We quickly fell in love with all things retriever and acquired a Golden Retriever puppy of our own, named Takoda, and began training him as well.
That following year, we went on our first duck hunt. The feeling we had the first time our respective dogs that we had trained ourselves retrieved ducks that we had shot is still something we can't put into words. Our love for hunting, working, and training our dogs grew and we realized that we wanted to find a way to make these things a bigger part of our lives.
One afternoon as we sat on the back porch grilling and enjoying good conversation, we began to discuss our mutual passion for our dogs and the outdoor sportsman lifestyle. After kicking around several ideas, Dixie Water Dogs was born. What started out as a part-time breeding operation has evolved into much more.
Today, Dixie Water Dogs is a part of Dixie Farms, LLC. The business has expanded from its beginnings as a small breeding program. We now offer limited training services, as well as a line of merchandise that promotes and focuses on the outdoor sportsman lifestyle. We also host workshops for training your own retriever, focusing on positive reinforcement techniques. Of course, we do still offer a small number of top tier British Labrador Retrievers, as well as the occasional started dog. Please keep in mind that our breeding program is very limited. We typically only offer puppies once a year. However, we think they’re worth the wait.
So, if you’re in the market for a new retriever, we hope you’ll keep us in mind. If you desire to learn more about training your puppy or dog (whether they came from us or not) using positive reinforcement methods, email us for information on one of our in-person or online workshops or seminars. If you love duck hunting and the outdoor lifestyle, take a look at our merchandise for one-of-a-kind t-shirts, caps, and more. For more information, browse this website or send us an email. We'll be happy to answer your questions. God bless, and happy hunting.
At Dixie Water Dogs, all of our dogs have dual registration papers from both the AKC and the UKC. This means all of our puppies are eligible for dual registration as well. Both organizations are first class operations, but we realize that some people may have one organization more active than the other in their area. Because of that, some people may prefer one to the other. With our pups, it's your choice. At present time, Dixie Water Dogs only offers limited registration for our puppies. Simply put, that just means you will not be able to bred your puppy. You will still enjoy all of the other benefits of having a registered dog with either or both clubs.
Dixie Water Dogs is not a puppy mill. We have a limited number of dogs and produce a limited number of puppies. Our dogs are our pets and part of our family. You won't find dozens of females here that live just to produce puppies. Our females are proven hunting dogs that spend time in our homes and hunt with us where the water meets the woods.
So what's the difference between British Labradors and American Labradors? Why did we decide to move from American Labs to British Labs? For us, there were several things to consider.
Calmness was certainly a primary factor. Typically, American Labs are highly energetic. While having plenty of energy is not necessarily a bad thing, it can present certain challenges. For starters, if you desire to have your dog spend time in your home, calmness is definitely a desired trait. Our dogs live in our homes with us. As such, we can attest to the calm and pleasant demeanor at the end of the day when the hunt is over. On the flip side, we have attempted to have American Labs as house dogs as well. While this is certainly not impossible, we have found it is much easier with British Labs. And nothing ruins a hunt quicker than having to constantly get your dog under control because they are too hyper. Energy is good, but bouncing off of the blind walls makes for a less enjoyable morning.
Size is another thing to consider. Again, if you desire your dog to stay indoors with you, the larger a dog is the more difficult it can be. British Labs are typically smaller than their American cousins. It's not uncommon for American Labs to surpass the 100 lb. mark, while British Labs are more in the 55-65 lb. range. They're big enough to get the job done without dominating your living room.
Last is ease of training. While not always the case, it has been our experience that British Labs are easier to train than Americans. At Dixie Farms, we rarely use electronic collars. We are not saying that electric collars are inhumane or wrong by any means. We are simply saying that for the most part we have not found them necessary to train our British Labs. More often than not, they were needed with our Americans.
Like with many things, it's all a matter of personal preference. American Labs are fine animals and can do tremendous things in the field. However, for us, we'll take a British over an American every time. Feel free to set up an appointment, come by the farm, and see for yourself. We think you'll agree.
While all of our dogs live on the farm as pets, some of our dogs participate in our select and limited breeding operation. Our current primary active dame and sire, along with their respective pedigrees, can be seen below.
Dixie's Last Stand at Blakeley, call name "Ali", is our current primary dam. Ali is a super sweet dog with the strength of a male and the energy to match.
TTF Dixie's Stonewall Jackson, call name "Jax", is our current primary sire. Jax is an intelligent dog that is amazingly calm inside the home, but with plenty of energy in the field.
At Dixie Water Dogs, we want our clients to get the most out of their dogs. A big part of that is developing a good relationships with your dog by training your dog in, what we consider, the proper way. Like most all things in life, balance is key. Our dogs are part of our family. They hunt with us in the field, but they also live with us in our homes. For this type of life, a well-behaved dog is a must. Nothing can ruin a hunt faster than constantly having to get your dog under control. However, when we first got into this business we saw so many people breeding these incredibly hyper dogs that required shock collars to force them to behave. We quickly knew that wasn't how we wanted to do things. At Dixie Water Dogs, we use positive reenforcement methods to train our dogs. Focusing on creating a bond of trust and love, we have found that not only can we produce a top quality retriever, but we enjoy our part of the experience even more.
